A 53-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday, Oct. 20, on Interstate 476 in Radnor Township after losing control of his bike at high speed, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Troopers were dispatched around 6:35 p.m. to mile marker 10.7 on I-476 North for a single-vehicle motorcycle crash, according to a State Police information release first reported by the Delaware County Daily Times. The crash site is near the Route 3 (West Chester Pike) interchange.

When troopers arrived, they found the rider face down and unconscious in the left travel lane, Patch reported. The initial dispatch described the rider as apparently deceased, but approaching crews were then told he was still breathing, according to the Daily Times' account. Responders performed CPR, but the effort was unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic, according to the State Police account. He lost control as he tried to change from the center lane to the left lane. The motorcycle's front end washed out, and the rider became pinned underneath.

The bike slid about 150 feet, left the roadway, struck a guide rail and came to rest in the left lane.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene. The office had not released the rider's name as of Wednesday, Oct. 21. State Police also withheld his identity and hometown.

No other vehicles were involved.

I-476 North was shut down for several hours following the crash. The closure affected the Blue Route, a major commuter artery connecting Delaware County to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The crash site sits near an area where PennDOT has a $5.2 million project underway to improve traffic flow, restripe ramps and reconfigure signals on Route 3 in Marple and Haverford townships. Scheduled overnight lane restrictions on Route 3 near the I-476 interchange were set to begin at 7 p.m. that evening, after the 6:35 p.m. dispatch, according to Hoodline, citing PennDOT. There is no indication the construction played a role in the crash.

Whether the rider was wearing a helmet has not been disclosed. Pennsylvania State Police are handling the investigation.
