The Pica family's 85-year-old pizzeria is back in business, this time in a smaller storefront in Broomall, just over the border in Marple Township.

Pica's Italian Market Broomall opened for its soft launch at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, at 1101 Sussex Blvd., Suite 10, according to a Patch report. The new location replaces the family's Upper Darby restaurant at 7803 West Chester Pike, which closed in May after 70 years of continuous operation.

The rebrand signals a shift in concept. What was once a full-service sit-down restaurant is now a market-style takeout spot, according to the restaurant's website. The Pica family describes it as a place to pick up dinner, stock up for the weekend, or grab a quick lunch rather than linger over a table.

Frank Pica Sr. founded the original pizzeria in 1941 at 62nd and Race Street in West Philadelphia with a brick oven, a take-out counter, and a few tables. He and his son Frank Jr. moved the operation to Upper Darby in 1956, where it grew into a full-service restaurant known for its square pizza.

The Broomall location opened with a limited menu because of a problem with what the family's website calls the PECO gas connection, which they said they are working to resolve. Signature square pizzas were available on opening day.

On the family's Facebook page, the Picas thanked customers for their patience during the transition, saying they were "truly humbled" and eager to serve the community again. On its website, the family acknowledged that closing the Upper Darby location was "a personal and difficult decision" but said the new concept embraces the roots Frank Pica Sr. established in 1941.
