Nine businesses will go before Radnor Township's Design Review Board on Wednesday, Sept. 9, seeking approval for signs, awnings and exterior changes along Lancaster Avenue and nearby corridors.
The biggest name on the board's agenda is Old Friend Restaurant, a contemporary American grill targeting a late-fall opening at 166 E. Lancaster Ave. in the Apartments at Wayne Station development. The restaurant is seeking approval for one wall sign and window graphics.
Old Friend is the project of Larry Kagan and Chas McFeely. Former Fork executive chef Sam Henzy will lead the kitchen, which will center on a charcoal-fired Josper grill and oven. The 86-seat restaurant will feature reclaimed mushroom wood, an oak bar and a firebrick-lined hearth, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Aug. 27.
Kagan told the Inquirer the name reflects his bond with McFeely: "It's someone between friend and family … someone you can pick up at any time, you can be yourself."
Also in the Wayne Business Overlay District: Simo's Barbering at 240 Lancaster Ave. is requesting approval for three awnings with its logo. The barbershop operates Tuesday through Saturday.
Koren's Kitchen, the catering and café business owned by Chef Koren Draper at 11 Louella Court, needs approval for one awning. Draper, a Walnut Hill College graduate with more than 15 years of culinary experience, also runs a second café at 100 Matsonford Road in Radnor, according to the Wayne Business Association.
The Little Gym, at 150–168 E. Lancaster Ave. in the same Wayne Station building as Old Friend, is seeking a wall sign and window graphics.
Two businesses along County Line Road in Bryn Mawr round out the commercial applications. Bare Nail Box, a nail salon and spa at 968 County Line Road, wants one wall sign. Frank's Pizza, at 958 County Line Road, is also requesting a wall sign.
Flagship Car Wash at 500 W. Lancaster Ave. in Strafford, which took over the former Pete's Express Car Wash site, is seeking approval to paint its building. The car wash is already operating at that location.
Returning as old business is Martini & Roz, the Fearless Restaurants Italian concept planned for 523 W. Lancaster Ave. The board will revisit its application for a monument sign, wall sign, exterior renovation and outdoor dining. That proposal first appeared at the Aug. 12 DRB meeting.
Two residential applications are also on the agenda: a fence at 229 Bloomingdale Ave. and an exterior renovation at 404 Cheswick Place.
The board meets at 6 p.m. in the Radnorshire Room. Applications for the next meeting, Oct. 14, are due by Sept. 23.
