Radnor High School's fall sports season expands beyond the football field with two matchups: a Central League rivalry golf outing against Haverford High on Wednesday, Aug. 26, and a boys varsity soccer opener against Franklin Towne Charter on Saturday, Aug. 29.
JV golf takes on Haverford at Merion West
The Raptors' JV boys and girls golf squads will tee off against Haverford High School at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Merion Golf Club's West Course, located at 300 Ellis Road in Haverford Township. It's a Central League rivalry match, pitting the two township schools on a course that sits in Haverford's backyard.
Merion's West Course, a National Historic Landmark designed by Hugh Irvine Wilson and opened in 1914, completed a renovation in 2025. It's a rare venue for a high school match.
Boys varsity soccer hosts Franklin Towne Charter
Radnor's boys varsity soccer team opens its 2026 season at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, against Franklin Towne Charter High School, a Philadelphia charter school. The RHS athletics schedule lists the game as a home contest for the Raptors.
New AD sets the tone
Athletic director Matthew Wicks, who took over the Radnor program after managing athletics for 15 high schools and 19 middle schools in Pasco County, Florida, spoke about his philosophy in a June 4 profile in The Radnorite: "High school sports are about developing people. Because not everybody goes on to play in college, but if our sports are competitive enough, then sometimes our kids have opportunities to move on to the next level if they want to."
Wicks, a former Division I offensive lineman at Georgia Southern University, also said he wants "to make sure the right oversight is given for our booster clubs to make our programs thrive."
The golf and soccer matchups are the only two events on the Raptors' schedule for the week of Aug. 24–30.
