Melissa Kellogg was posing for photos with her wedding party at Pomme in Radnor on April 11 when she hit the ground.

"I just started convulsing. … It was really scary," Kellogg told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "I went down, hard."

Thirty minutes before she was set to marry Derek Graham at the wooded venue on King of Prussia Road, Kellogg, 36, suffered a seizure. She was rushed by ambulance to Lankenau Medical Center's emergency department in Wynnewood, about four miles east on Lancaster Avenue.

Doctors concluded the seizure was isolated, triggered by a combination of wedding-day stress, dehydration, and not sleeping or eating, according to reporting by the Inquirer's Aubrey Whelan, published April 18 and summarized by DELCO Today.

A trauma bay turned wedding chapel

While Kellogg stabilized in one of Lankenau's trauma bays, ER nurses pulled out streamers and balloons they keep on hand to celebrate colleagues' weddings and new babies. They decorated the bay around her hospital bed.

Graham's brother, who was serving as officiant, was redirected from Pomme to the emergency department. A few close family members followed. The ceremony went forward in the decorated trauma bay with Kellogg still in her hospital gown.

The couple, both 36 and from Downingtown, had planned their celebration at Pomme, a venue at 175 King of Prussia Rd. that sits about a quarter-mile from the Routes 476 and 30 interchange. Instead, they said their vows under fluorescent lights with an IV pole nearby.

Kellogg described the improvised ER wedding as "wonderful," according to the Inquirer.

Graham said the day swung from terror to joy. "I went from having one of the scariest moments of my life to having the happiest moment of my life — getting married," he told the Inquirer. "Even if it was in the hospital."
