A fallen tree damaged the roof of a historic barn at The Quadrangle senior living community on Darby Road, and the contractor hired to fix it must clear a Historical Commission review before work can begin.

Haverford Township's Historical Commission will take up the rehabilitation plan at its July 20 meeting, according to the commission's published agenda. Lancaster-based Nolt Mathis LLC, a contractor that has previously completed renovations at The Quadrangle, filed the application to repair the barn's exterior at 3300 Darby Road, the 74-acre continuing care campus.

The barn sits on a property listed on the township's Historic Resource Survey under two entries: the Linden House (Survey No. 41) and The Quadrangle (Survey No. 94). Commission records show the barn roof issue first appeared on the agenda in July 2025, but the formal application naming Nolt Mathis as the contractor is new to the July agenda.

Demolition proposal near Sears kit house

The same meeting will also consider whether to recommend approval of a plan by Marley RE Holdings LLC, a Philadelphia-area real estate investor, to demolish a residence at 43 E. Turnbull Ave. The property sits within 100 feet of 38 E. Turnbull Ave., identified as a Sears Elsmore-design kit house, and within 100 feet of a second historic resource at 42 E. Marthart Ave.

Under the township's zoning ordinance, any work within 100 feet of a listed historic resource requires Historical Commission review. The commission is advisory; final authority rests with the Board of Commissioners.

The Sears Elsmore house at 38 E. Turnbull Ave. was documented on a Pennsylvania Historic Resource Survey Form in 2020 and authenticated by researcher Cindy Catanzaro. Sears sold kit houses by mail order from 1908 to 1942, and Pennsylvania ranks third nationally with nearly 2,000 documented Sears homes.

What happens next

The commission's next meeting is open to the public, with a comment period on the agenda. The board will make recommendations to the Board of Commissioners, though no subsequent hearing date has been announced for either item.
