A Wynnewood nonprofit has donated more than 20,000 specially designed sweatshirts to women recovering from mastectomies, shipping them free to anyone in the world who asks.

Pockets of Hope, which operates out of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Haverford Township, sews hidden interior pockets into zip-up hoodies so patients can hold and conceal the surgical drainage tubes required after breast cancer surgery. Commercial mastectomy sweatshirts retail for $40 to $70, according to founder Katelynn Devinney. Pockets of Hope gives its version away at no cost.

The organization's website lists 20,366 total donations to date.

Devinney, a senior paralegal and mother of four, launched the effort in 2022 after her mother, Trish, underwent a mastectomy at Fox Chase Cancer Center. Trish had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, underwent radiation and the cancer later returned.

"I tell people all the time, you don't have to know how to sew, just come and help," Devinney told 6abc.

The nonprofit holds monthly volunteer sewing events at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Wynnewood, where dozens of people cut fabric, iron, fold and package the hoodies. A June event drew volunteers and pushed the running total past 19,500 before additional shipments brought the count above 20,000, according to the organization's Facebook page and website.

Jessica Getson, a volunteer who received a Pockets of Hope sweatshirt after her own double mastectomy in 2024, showed up to her first sewing event while still recovering with drainage tubes in place. She has volunteered at monthly events since.

Pockets of Hope runs entirely on donations: $30 covers two sweatshirts including shipping, $75 covers five and $150 covers ten. Devinney told Philadelphia magazine in May that a single bulk manufacturing order costs $11,000, with another $11,000 for shipping. A $15,000 prize from the 2025 Be Well Philly Health Hero Challenge helped fund one round of orders.
