The Haverford Township School Board accepted the retirement of Nancy Naylor, a middle school counselor who served the district for 33.5 years, at its Thursday, Oct. 22, meeting.
Naylor's retirement takes effect Feb. 5, 2027, according to the board's meeting minutes. All nine board members voted to approve the personnel action. The board also accepted the resignation of Rebekah Baker, a part-time cafeteria and recess monitor at Lynnewood Elementary, effective Oct. 14.
The meeting opened with student ambassadors from Lynnewood Elementary presenting preliminary plans for the school's 75th anniversary celebration. The minutes do not detail the students' remarks.
Middle school representative Cora Osborne and high school representative Beatriz Cox also delivered student reports to the board.
Cellphone policy gets first reading
The board gave first reading to Policy 237, covering personal electronic devices, on a unanimous vote. The action came one day after the Pennsylvania Senate sent Senate Bill 1014 (SB 1014), a statewide bell-to-bell cellphone ban, to Gov. Josh Shapiro by a 47-3 vote, Northeast Times reported. Schools would need policies in place by the 2027-28 school year under that bill. Shapiro has said he will sign it.
The board's first reading does not adopt the policy. A second reading and final vote are still required.
Three other student conduct policies also received first readings, all unanimously: Policy 220 on student expression, dress and grooming; Policy 223 on bicycles, motor vehicles and other personal transportation; and Policy 224 on care of district property.
$652,074 in disbursements approved
Board members unanimously approved $652,074.49 in payments, split between $556,827.34 from the general fund and $95,247.15 from the bond capital fund. Board member Chris Shelton made the motion, seconded by Nicole Snyder.
The board also approved several out-of-district educational contracts for special-needs students, including placements at Martin Luther School, Green Tree School, Elwyn Davidson and River Rock Academy. Individual tuition and services contracts ranged from about $51,700 to nearly $172,800 for the 2026-27 school year.
Other personnel actions
The board approved the appointment of Jesusa Josue-Almqvist as a full-time instructional assistant at Lynnewood Elementary at $24.96 per hour. Samuel Rostin was moved from part-time to full-time custodian at $26.68 per hour.
Two coaching hires were approved: Kaitlyn Delaney for girls' JV-B softball at Haverford High School and Justin Minnich for boys' seventh- and eighth-grade lacrosse at the middle school. Both will earn $39.54 per hour.
Board President Latanya King presided over the meeting, which ran from 7:31 p.m. to 8:35 p.m. with all nine members present. No residents spoke during the public comment period on agenda items. Rich Migliore addressed the board during the general public comment period on the topic of reading levels for secondary school teachers.
The board's next meeting is a work session scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Oakmont Administration Building board room.
